The deeper story
The man whose son was dying begged Jesus to come and Jesus offers a kind of rebuke! "You won't have faith until you see miracles and wonders!" Jesus was a man of compassion – I don’t believe he did not care about the child or the man. Jesus calls to the deeper story going on in us. He responds to the immediate, the son is healed, but I wonder if he was calling up a deeper faith in the man. In the middle of the story the man believes but at the end he has faith.
In the hidden places
What deeper story is God calling to in us just now? Is he calling to a deeper trust, letting go of defences? A deeper compassion? For each of us that will be a different story but I think if Jesus is the same man as described in the Gospel of John he will be speaking to the hidden places in us. Kirsty Hook
