Lent: For whose glory?
Friday 25 March 2011
How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God. John 5:44
Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai. Piu sen
Read John 5:30-47 and return I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
Fooling around
Jesus, in the role of the blunt Yorkshireman again: the audience you play to is each other rather than God. You seek glory from one another. You fiddle around with scripture, toying with the words of Moses. You refuse to come through them to me, to have life! Get serious. You’re living on the circumference of your life, of the Life. Come into the Centre. Get real. ‘I seek not to please myself’. Think I’m conceited? I say this only that you may be saved!
Turned inside out
Picasso was fond of painting the inside of a man or woman, turning a person inside out to show what was in the inside - often fear and anxiety. Jesus exposes the ego, attempts to turn us inside out, to show us who is our centre of attention. He moves us, urges us into and towards truth, the Truth, himself. Andrew Hook
