Lent: I am the bread of life

Wednesday 6 April 2011

So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” John 6:30-31

Read John 6:27-40 and return 'I am the bread of life.'

Have you noticed?

Have you noticed how we never tire of bread? No matter how much we eat, or how often, we never reach that point, as we do with other foods from time to time, of not being able to face another slice of bread. Have you noticed how every nation has its own form of bread? A staple food, nurturing and satisfying. Have you noticed how the smell of freshly baked bread fills us with anticipation? How we savour the smell and delight in it? How comforting it is, familiar yet never boring? It draws us towards it, calls to us, beckons, awakens our appetite, welcomes... "Come, eat..." We cannot be indifferent to bread. It feeds and sustains us. It calls for a response from us. It invites us to share in it. His body is bread for the life of the world, take, eat.
