Lent: Jesus, Light of the World
Wednesday 30 March 2011
The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27: 1
William Holman Hunt, The Light of the World

Allowing His light
Jesus comes bearing a lantern, knocking at the door, seeking to bring light into the darkness, if only we will give him entry. We will have light if we follow him. The story goes that William Holman Hunt, the artist, modelled the figure of Jesus on himself. At first thought this seems an outrageous, blasphemous almost, thing to do. Yet perhaps he was trying to convey the message that, as we are in Christ, as we allow him into our lives, so Christ is in us. And as his light shines in our lives, we too, are the light of the world.
Journeying from darkness to light
Our journey through Lent is one through darkness, but we look for the dawning of light on Easter Day when darkness is put to death. When light returns in glory, we too are ready to put behind us the dark days of Lent, to leave behind our fasting and all that has held us back. To enter celebration and rejoice in the return of the Son to light. Jane Denniston
