Lent: One with God

Wednesday 9 March 2011

A fish cannot drown in water, A bird does not fall in air. In the fire of creation, God doesn't vanish: The fire brightens. Each creature God made must live in its own true nature; How could I resist my nature, That lives for oneness with God? Mechtild of Magdeburg

Lent Introduction Read John 1:1-18 and return In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not understood it.

One with God

John's gospel like Genesis begins with an account of elemental origins and purpose. From dust you came and to dust you will return. In him was life and that life is our light. Plain and succinct. Yet it gets complicated as we either seek light elsewhere or hedge our bets. There is back and forward, drawn to and hiding from the light, at peace with God and suspicious too. 'You have made us for yourself and our hearts find no peace until they rest in you.' said Augustine. We are meant and made for each other and yet there will be a tussle.

Tidal patterns and the soul

It's a pity that the word repentence is so polluted for it attempts to help us in the midst of this daily internal movement, this waxing and waning. We throw ourselves upon His shore then retreat from close encounter. Maybe we are unsure of our welcome or of our true nature and life source.
