Senses walk across causeway to Lindisfarne

Saturday, 12 June 2010 | 10am

The Senses group is interested in exploring the experience of faith through the senses and welcomes anyone who wishes to join us in a walk across the causeway to Lindisfarne/Holy Island off the Northumbrian coast. Here's the plan: With the incoming tide at our back we will walk across the sandy banks stopping a few times for some reflections, readings and possibly even some sacramental practice/exercise and return later in the afternoon by the same route as the tide recedes before us. Barefoot walking for a more sensual experience would be good but clearly optional - there will be sandbanks, muddy bits and pools of water so wellies or crocs say would be an option.
  • This constitues part of the Cuthbert's Way which goes between Melrose, the location of St Cuthbert's early monastic life, to Lindisfarne (Holy Island), the area of St Cuthbert's later ministry and death.
  • This is for all ages though noting, as it is a 3 mile walk there and 3 miles back, young ones may not manage.
  • Some are driving straight onto the island (especially those with young children) others will walk
  • Arrival time on to the island for walkers is expected to be c.12:30pm.
  • We will have a sit down picnic together - bring your packed lunches.
  • Departure time from the island is expcted to be roughly about 5pm.
  • Please note cars can't leave the island much before 6.30pm.
  • Gus MacLeod and I will check the weather forecast on Friday. If it is poor then the thought of being marooned on a wee island in less than pleasant weather will mean that we will cancel. We will email round on Friday 19th to give an update.
  • Clothing. It can be a bit blustery or even chilly especially near the far end of the island by the castle so have a mind to this when choosing clothing.
  • Directions: Down the A1 and after Haggerston Castle turn left when the sign for Beal appears. Head for the car park that is just before this mainland road from the A1 turns into the causeway - it's on the left side. The road distance is about 70 miles so judge your own leaving time and how long you want to take to get there. Be ready to walk at 10.00am. As a guidline we recommend that if leaving from Edinburgh this is done no later than 8.30am.
  • Transportation.

Please tell us by emailing if you are coming and if you are able to offer spaces in your car, how many spaces and where you live (area). Please do so by Wednesday 9th June at the latest so that we can do the necessary matching up. If you'd like to come and there is no message about spaces to convey then obviously feel free just to turn up though a wee indication of whether you are coming may be sweet.

    Strict 10am start

We aim to leave at a strict 10am from the car park on the coastal end of the causeway. The tides are strong and so we may do some pretty intentional walking for the first half of the way over to stay ahead of the tide. The latter half and the walk back can be taken at a different pace.
