François-Auguste Biard - A Laplander asleep by a fire
A prompt
Some thoughts prompted by reading Three kinds of men, a chapter in Richard Rohr’s Wild man to wise man refelctin on the story of the man with a withered hand... The man with the withered hand in Luke 6 has become passive in his situation, not expecting anything to happen. He has no motivation. In a sense, he is asleep. Another story that I am reminded of is the Magi visiting Bethlehem in Matthew 2. They are motivated and active in seeking out the new born Messiah to worship him. Herod is also interested but seems to be motivated out of fear and jealousy. The Jewish religious establishment seem however to be asleep – too caught up with their own stuff to be aware of something new happening.
Questions
What helps us from becoming sleepy? How do you imagine Jesus kept motivated? What motivates us?
And finally
In Matthew 2, Joseph is also in focus. He seems to be a man of dreams (see Richard Rohr’s Soul Brothers) ; someone with awareness and vision to see what God is doing. Perhaps he also is a model for us? Pete Edwards
