Christ at the sea of Galilee, Tintoretto
The non-verbal communication of Jesus
A gesture waves us on, answering our own wave... From A Walk, Rainer Maria Rilke
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Matthew 14:28
If the body tells us more than speech what might Jesus' gestures, his body language, communicate to us?
If I were to meditate upon this alone, for example his curled up body, compassionate face, pierced hand, where might that take me? We may note the questions that arise from our perplexity and irritation, relief or surprise at Jesus's gestures. We join his disciples, watching his every move, attempting to come to terms with the questions that emerge within us.
To what am I invited? Into what space am I welcomed? Rest, fearlessness, vulnerability, trust perhaps.
Reflections will start on Wednesday 22nd February, then weekly on Thursdays from the 2nd of March until Holy Week, when they become daily reflections.
