Power: Strong women and strong men

Mary and Elizabeth
Two strong women
Whose wombs
Carried two strong men

Each day in Advent readings are given by various contributors according to the prayer's themes of light, power, joy and laughter and finally of love. A Joyce Rupp piece read by Mags Bryan. Image: Sculpture of Mary and Elizabeth, Rory Geoghegan, SJ

Mary and Elizabeth, Rory Geoghegan, SJ; Comment and reading of Joyce Rupp's Mary and Elizabeth by Mags Bryan

'Soon afterwards Mary got ready and hurried off to a town in the hill country of Judea.  She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth.  When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby moved within her. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and said in a loud voice, "You are blessed of all women, and blessed is the child you will bear!  Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord's mother comes to visit me?  For as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby within me jumped with gladness.  How happy you are to believe that the Lord's message to you will come true!" '  Luke 1:39-43

The words power and strength together make me (Kirsty) feel uncomfortable, but these men, these women show power and strength at its most pure, at its most complete.

Two Strong Women

Perhaps you might want to consider at this time if you have a sense of inner birthing.

Mary and Elizabeth
Two strong women
Whose wombs
Carried two strong men

Mary and Elizabeth
Two hospitable women
With wombs wide, full
Of grace and conversion

Mary and Elizabeth
two generous women,
nurturing nests,
embracing seedling life
in their bodies’ secret homes

Mary and Elizabeth
Two loving women,
Blessing one another
With the grace of affection,
Strength of communion

Mary and Elizabeth
Did they know the dance
Within their wombs
Might change a hurting heart,
Transform a languished life

Mary and Elizabeth
Two holy women
Wombs gestating foodness,
Sources of nurturing grace
Yeast for every inner birthing
