Unless

March 17, 2022 Andrew Hook

Antony Gormley, Sound II (detail)

Unless you repent you will all perish as they did. (Luke 13:3 from Luke 13:1-9)

Unless: An absolute word

‘Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners? Do you think they were more guilty?’ Here Jesus highlights a game of comparison and then points to an absolute, an observation that all die, one way or another.  ‘Perish’ is the word Jesus uses.  A particular word with meaning beyond the ceasing of a heartbeat, of blood around a body.  Unless you repent, unless you turn.  There’s a web of sticky heady speculation. There’s noise and there are distractions, internal and external.  In stillness, what turning is actually incredibly necessary for me to live a full life, that can’t happen without that turning?

What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?  Mary Oliver, The summer day

Threshold meditation

Turning aside, turning towards, turning into, turning around. With an ‘unless’ in mind go to the threshold meditation.
